Soak up the Sun

Oh I love summer! Just sitting outside, being lazy....Love it, love it, love it!! And I am enjoying my reduced work week because it means I have extra time in the afternoons to veg and enjoy summer with my kiddo!

So far our summer has just been...lazy! Shelby has been going to camp 3 days a week and seems to really like it and is making new friends. Her friend Lexi (who she has gone to preschool and kindergarten with) is at camp too. They are planning a sleepover and both girls seem really excited about it. I have to say I am too, though I am sure I will take those words back AFTER the sleepover!

So we bought a pool over the weekend. Granted it is not a nice olympic size pool but you know what, it will sure be nice on those hot summer days! It is 8 ft across and 30 inches deep. Just perfect for sitting and cooling off. Which is good because I can't swim anyway!

The past two days Shelby has been lounging in the pool and soaking up the sun.

The Man in the Mirror

Yesterday was a surreal day. First off Chad sent me a CNN breaking news email that Farrah Fawcett had passed away. Sad, but it had been expected. A bit later he sent me another CNN breaking news that Michael Jackson had suffered cardiac arrest, then a few minutes later another that said he was in a coma. Then about an hour later on our way home we heard that he had passed away. Granted I found him to be weird and kind of freaky but I have always enjoyed his music. And listening to his songs now does bring back childhood memories.

There is one song that keeps going through my head (Man in the Mirror - hence the blog title!) and it reminds me of junior high because I believe all three years of junior high they would play this song as they did a slide show of students. I know, not to original were they??

Then I had to laugh last night because as we were watching a special on MJ (what channel WASN'T doing some type of special??) and they were playing the video "Thriller". Again another memory pops up in my head when I hear this song and I picture myself as a little second grader attending some (hokey) program at school. They were playing MJ videos and his music and kids were breakdancing and doing the moonwalk. Hokey but I think it was for a good cause. We brought in canned food and hey - we got out of class! What is funny is that Shelby was sitting next to me when this song came on and she goes "Mommy, remember in 13 Going on 30? They danced to this song!" It just made me think how songs can invoke different memories in all of us.

It was just awesome to see how my daughters memories are and will differ from mine.

See You in September

(First Day of School, September 5, 2008)

Well yesterday was Shelby's last day of school. I had to giggle at how animated she was when she got home. She was telling us how all the teachers had kleenex's and all the kids had kleenex's and then the buses pulled out of the parking lot they all waved with the hankie's! It reminds me of when I was a kid on the last day of school. The buses would pull out of the parking lot and honk the horns. There was just something exciting about that. And Shelby said that her kindergarten teacher will be teaching 1st grade next year! Maybe she will be lucky and get her same teacher again!!

On a sad note there was a 16 yr kid that was killed in a car accident yesterday afternoon. What is sad is that he was probably on his way home from the last day of school and just ready to enjoy his summer. We ventured out to Monroe around 4 and we noticed glass on the road and the residue/ashes from the flairs. On the way home we passed the same spots and saw kids standing on the side of the road where a memorial had already been set up. It just reminds you that we have to slow down when driving, take in consideration of the weather conditions and such. The road here is so whinedy with such sharp corners. Add a little rain after we have had dry weather for 30 days and you get slick roads. Slick roads, fast speeds and sharp corners do not mix. http://www.king5.com/video/index.html?nvid=373185&shu=1

So as I mentioned in my previous post I was going to take a pic of Shelby on the last day of school. Funny how on the last day of school she was all grins and totally hammed it up for the camera but on the first day she just rolled her eyes at me and I had to prod her to let me take a picture!

(Last Day of School June 19, 2009)

And so summer begins. No big plans for us. With our shortened work weeks though I plan to do some fun stuff with Shelby in the afternoons once I am done w/work. Starting Monday she will be going to my parents, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday she will be going to camp at Cherry Valley Elementary and then on Thursdays she will be going to Chad's parents. Shelby seems excited so hopefully it will be a good summer for all!

Summer Lovin' had me a Blast

I cannot believe that tomorrow is Shelby's last day of school! Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday my baby was starting kindergarten and now after tomorrow she will be a big first grader!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Today she brought home a packet of various worksheets/projects they did throughout the year. It is so cute to see how her spelling has developed over time. In the beginning I felt like I was reading a foreign language (I mean what does bkos mean?) but now I read what she has written and I actually get it! Guess we just have to think like a kindergartner!

The other day we were at the doctors (see blog regarding my toe...update...it is broken :( )and she was reading one of the books. It was a Dr. Seuss book and she was slowly but surely reading it word for word! It made me proud!

Shelby is excited for the summer. She will be spending Monday's with my mom (and her cousins once my brother gets them for the summer) and will be spending Thursdays with Chad's dad. Then the other days she will be going to summer camp put on through the school district. She knows at least two people that will be going there so it should be fun! And I have reduced work hours at work so I will be done with work earlier in the day so more time for me to play with Shelby out in the sun!

Tomorrow I will have to remember to take a pic of Shelby on her last day of school. The scrapbooker in me is coming out. I can see the page now. The first day of school and the last day of school - before and after!!

Sowing the Seeds of Love

This year we decided to plant a garden. We thought we would try to grow our own fruit & veggies to save a few bucks at the grocery store. So Chad cleared an area and over Memorial Day weekend I ho'd away. I didn't do the best job of clearing the area of rocks and weeds - there were just too many!! So what if we get a little grass in with our lettuce. I am sure grass is good for us! The dog and cats eat it, why can't we???

So my friend Yvonne gave me a few strawberry plants (Thanks Yvonne!) and the other day Shelby was all like "Look Mommy, a strawberry!" Granted it is VERY little and VERY green but it's cool to see the flowers turning in to strawberries.

So anyway I planted this stuff Memorial day weekend and a few days ago Chad goes "Either its weeds or we actually have stuff coming through" So we all trekked out there and guess what...it wasn't weeds!!! We have actual veggies growing!! Okay, okay, we did cheat on a few and bought starters at the store but we planted corn, lettuce, peas and carrots from little seeds. It is SO cool!!

We wanted a scarecrow and I was going to make one out of Chads old clothes. Well Shelby, being the smart little cookie that she is, remembered we had one from Halloween. Now I am not sure how long it will last in the elements but it will work for now. Though...I about poop my pants every time I look out the window because I think someone is standing in the backyard! I hope that if it scares me that it will scare away the birds and the deer!

(Hard to see the row of veggies but there are little sprouts coming up!)

(See? See! I told you!!)
